I'm finding during this adventure that the little things that a teacher gets to do are some of the best things! Today I had the opportunity to take my class down to have their spring pictures taken. I have a class full of clowns. They all wanted combs to fix their hair, and one student told me the following. "Ms. Lett, I DON'T take pictures looking hit!" I chuckled as he was combing his afro. When it was his turn for pictures he stood as the photographer instructed, and then at the last second he winked. WINKED. Welp, there's his spring picture.
Another small thing that always cracks me up is when students make pop culture references. The other day I was going over spelling words. I spelled out the word independent. I N D E P E N D E N T. If you have ever heard the song, Independent by Webbie, Lil' Phat and Lil' Boosie (haha) than you will get the following reference/joke. If not, check it out and have a laugh. So after I had spelled out the word I hear one of my biggest class clowns mutter from the back of the room, "Do you know what I mean, mayne?" (which are the next line of lyrics after the rappers spell out INDEPENDENT). My CT had no idea what the boy had said, but I sat there and silently chuckled to myself.
One last small thing that has brightened my day happened when I collected a literacy packet from one of my lower students. I have been working with her and we've had a lot of fun together. In her literacy packet there was an assignment asking her to write a letter to someone. She wrote to me. I turned to the page to find the following entry,
"Dear Ms. Lett,
You are a really good teacher, and you are really nice to me.
Love, ******"
This little note made me smile greatly, and I was sure to respond to her letter with a message of my own for her!
I am learning a lot and feel as though all of the struggles are starting to pay off.
