Man, I have not written since March 15th!!! To say that I have been slammed is surely an understatement. Since my last post I have grown as a teacher in many ways. I honestly love teaching. I love getting up in front of the class and explaining how something works or how to do something, but more importantly I love seeing my students "get it". That moment is priceless.
My students do a daily journal in which they write down a quote in their journals. This quote is typically chosen by my CT. Additionally, they are typically from famous individuals. Today, my CT was talking to a parent during the time for our journals. I was locked out of the computer (where the quotes are kept), so I needed to think of something, and fast. I decided to write down a quote that I recall my Great Grandmother Grummer saying quite often: "When it's all; it's all".
I wrote this quote on the board and denoted the author. My students asked right away, "Ms. Lett, is your grandma famous?" My answer? "Well......yes. She is to me."
I had a blast talking with my students about my grandmother. They asked many questions of which I was pleased to answer. I have never really thought about bringing in family stories to teach historial events, but it proved to be a great strategy today. I was able to touch on The Great Depression and the frugal personalities that ensued as a result of this event in history. It was so fun for me to read the journal entries that my students were able to come up with based on the quote. Many students asked me personal questions, and I enjoyed answering them while also asking them a bit about themselves. This is what a teacher can do to build relationships, and I cannot wait to incorporate a communication route like this in my future classroom.
I have truly been enjoying my students. I love talking with them about their weekends and the "5th grade drama". I told them no one could pay me enough to go back to 5th grade. They are warriors!
I'm going to miss these kids when my time is up with them.
6 more days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are a natural!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember much of the sayings Grandma G had. This is very interesting. It is amazing how having very little can mold a strong character. Once you remove the things that are not needed you can focus on what is important. And then you can truly have it all. Thank you for writing this.
