Freedom Writers

Before I started my journey as a learning teacher I found myself watching inspirational films about teaching. My favorite movie of all stars Hillary Swank. She plays a first year teacher in a newly integrated school. I first watched this movie and took it at face value. Good movie.
Today I decided to watch the movie again, and as I'm watching, I find myself relating to her in so many ways. She comes into the class on her first day totally freaked out. She writes her name on the board, and erases it just to rewrite it again. (I totally did this) The kids walk in and she's thinking, "What am I doing here? Who do I think I am? Are they going to see right through me?" (Totally thought/think this)
She pours her heart into her students and the love she shows to them earns their respect. The students she teaches come from neighborhoods filled with danger and homes filled with hurt. By coming alongside each of her students, making sure they all feel important, she is able to do things I can only pray I'll be able to do. She, Erin Gruwell, wrote a book she named "Teach With Your Heart". How fitting. I am looking forward to reading this book.
